When my brother and I were young, we would pick blackberries for my grandmothers and mom in hopes of our favorite dessert, blackberry balls. Back then, I hated picking berries, but loved the results.
These dumplings stay firm and dense without swelling in the berry mixture.
It helps that our three kids love the blackberry recipes as much as I did back then. A bowl of these blackberry balls with a spoon or two of vanilla ice cream, preferably homemade, instantly transports me back in time.
° 2 cups of flour
° 1 small tablespoon of salt
° 1/4 cup of shortening
° 1 egg yolk
° 4 large milk spoons
° 1/4 of fresh blackberries
° 2 cups of white sugar
° 2 cups of water
° 1 large butter spoon
° 1 small tablespoon of cinnamon
1 – In a large saucepan, put the blackberries / sugar / water / butter / and cinnamon. Cook 30 min
2 – In a mixing bowl Beat together the flour and salt; mixing egg yolk to crumbs. Add the milk one tablespoon at a time, stirring with a fork, until the flour mixture is moist.
3 – Divide the dough in half and form it into small balls.
4 – put dumplings in the berries. boil meatballs, covered, about 15 min and do not stir until cooked through.
