There are some houseguest questions nobody really teaches you.
How much should you help clean?
Should you wash the dishes?
Should you take out the trash?
And then there's the question that can leave even the most thoughtful guest wondering:
Do you strip the bed before you leave—or make it up neatly and pretend nobody ever slept there?
That last one can be surprisingly confusing!
I've stayed in homes where the expected thing was obvious, and others where I wasn't quite sure what the host wanted. And honestly, when you're trying to be a thoughtful guest, you don't want to accidentally create more work for the person who invited you.
So, should you remove the bedding or make the bed before leaving as a houseguest?
In most situations, the safest and most considerate choice is to follow your host's preference if they've mentioned one or if there's an obvious place where used linens are supposed to go.
Otherwise, neatly making the bed is often perfectly acceptable.
The key is understanding the household and making things easier—not harder—for your host.
Why This Little Houseguest Detail Matters
At first glance, stripping a bed seems like an obvious courtesy.
You slept in it, so shouldn't you remove the sheets?
Well...not necessarily.
Different households have completely different routines.
Some hosts want all used bedding removed and placed in a laundry basket so they can immediately start washing it.
Other hosts would much rather you leave the bed exactly as it is because they can see what needs to be changed and don't want you rummaging through the bedroom looking for somewhere to put the linens.
And some people simply prefer a made bed because it makes the room look tidy until they're ready to clean it.
That's why there's no universal houseguest rule that says "always strip the bed" or "always make the bed."
The considerate thing is to pay attention to the household.
So, Should You Strip the Bed?
Strip It If Your Host Asks You To
This is the easiest situation.
If your host says something like:
"When you leave, just put the sheets in the laundry basket."
Then that's exactly what you should do.
Don't overthink it!
Remove the sheets, pillowcases, and any other bedding they specifically asked you to remove, then place everything where they indicated.
Strip It If There's an Obvious Linen Hamper
If you've been staying in a guest room and there's a clearly designated laundry basket or hamper with used linens inside, that can be a pretty good indication that the household separates bedding after guests leave.
In that situation, following the established routine is usually more helpful than making the bed.
But there's an important exception:
Don't go searching through closets and cabinets to figure out where everything belongs.
If you're unsure, ask.
A quick, "Would you like me to strip the bed or leave it made?" can save everyone confusion.
When Making the Bed Is Better
Sometimes the most considerate thing is simply to leave the room neat.
If your host hasn't given you instructions and there's no obvious place for used bedding, making the bed neatly is a perfectly reasonable choice.
This is especially true if:
- You're unsure where the laundry goes.
- The bedding appears to be staying in the room.
- You don't want to disturb items in a private space.
- The host hasn't mentioned stripping the bed.
- You're staying with someone who prefers to handle household chores themselves.
There's nothing rude about making the bed.
In fact, leaving the room looking tidy can be a thoughtful gesture.
